any experienced proffesionals on right now? something wrong with dog, vet is closeed,?

so before i go the doggie er and pay triple, i was hoping someone could give me an idea of what may be wrong..

yesterday while walking, not running, just a good steady walk, approx 2 miles.. when 3/4 of the way home she started caughing and hacking, like she was choking.. and kept going on. then she puked. there was a small amount of last night kibble with white frothy mucous. like she had been swallowing air..
after she puked, she was not hacking so bad. but kept it up intermitantly for about an hour or so.. we rested the day, no exercise, and the coughing stopped..

then thismorning, when i let her out to potty, she plays for a bit. and when comes back in is coughing again..

she sounds like a pig, a weird snorting hackiing coughing, in her chest..
i thought at first she swallowed a bee on our walk.. because she is otherwise healthy, eats well, exercise, and vet checked up to date on all shots..

any ideas??today is sunday, vet is closed, er vet is too expen
sorry, i should say she is a black lab, age 4.5 mo. and at the last vet visit weighdn in at 43 lbs..she is a big girl, but healthy. so thats why i am so confused as to why this started with no warning at all..
hence why at first i thought she swallowd a bug…

  1. My pugs do this all the time. There is a name for it, but I’m not sure what. It sounds exactly what you are describing. My dogs are 8,5, and 4. The 5 year old does it the most. It’s not that often, but still. I personally wouldn’t go to the ER, but would check with the vet tomorrow.

  2. My Chihuahua has always done that. I have never taken her to the vet. She doesn’t vomit though. I would let it go for a day or three more and if she doesn’t quit with the attacks, then I would take her in.

That’s the wierdest thing right when I was done typing this my dog just took a drink of water and started to do it again. She is diabetic and gorges on water.

Oh by the way I’m glad that you recognize the obvious, that you are a GOONIE! By the way I am THE ALL AMERICAN!!!!

I think that you can wait till Monday morning. All of my dogs have done that and it’s because either they’ve eaten their food too quickly or picked up something off the floor and it’s kind of stuck.

It could also be that he’s got like a hair stuck in her throat and it’s tickling the throat, that’s what happens when my pup picks up something off the floor because of our hair.

As long as she’s not doing it constantly, she should be fine until the vet opens on Monday. One thing that black labs are known for is swallowing the strangest things, so the vet might end up having to take an x-ray of her. Hope this helps, good luck!

  5. It is called Kennel Cough by some people, but the correct term is tracheo bronchitis. It sounds horrible, but usually isn’t dangerous at all. Dogs get over it in about a month. You can go to the vet and get a round of antibiotics if she seems to get worse. Sometimes it is a virus that causes this and sometimes it is a bacterial infection. But it doesn’t matter which it is, it takes about a month for a dog to completely recover. It is just like when you get a bad cold with bronchitis.

I would keep her close to home and not do any fast or far walking that could start off a coughing spell. And remember she is contagious to other dogs, she caught this from another dog, so keep her a bit secluded if possible. Kennel Cough has a unique coughing sound like the dog is trying to hack up a stuck bone and the coughing fit is usually followed by a spit up of clear or whitish fluid. Not a whole stomach full of vomit, but just a bit of stuff comes up.

  6. I think you can wait to see your regular vet. The most important thing is to rule heart a heart problem. Dogs with heart disease cough. There’s also a loud snorting thing dogs do that’s harmless reverse sneezing. A dog with a narrow or collapsed trachea has a cough that sounds like a goose honk and often ends with a gag and a bit of fluid coming up.
Since your dog is young and otherwise in good health I doubt this episode is serious but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

  7. Wouldn’t rush to the vet. Keep a lot of water available for it. Probably is working something out of its system. Watch where you are walking & see if anyones been spraying. Avoid those areas.

  8. My dog and cat are both registered with the P.D.S.A. because, I am in receipt of benefits, (and not because I don’t want to work etc., but due to bad health), but, whether you are or not, I’m sure that if you are that concerned about your dog’s health, if you phone your local branch emergency number, (it may be the same as the normal surgery number), there will be someone who can give you advice as to what the problem may be and whether you should take your dog to your own vet.

My dog is a 4 1/2yr. Staff. Again, not overweight, well-exercised, up-to-date on shots etc., but, (a) will always have to munch a bit on grass, which has the same effect of making him puke, and (b) I don’t know where you live, so what the weather is like in your area, but it’s pretty warm and humid where I am, and if she is a well-built lady, this kind of weather doesn’t seem to agree with heavier dogs – remember they do “pant” to cool themselves down. Ever considered that she may have a touch of asthma? Yes. Dogs and cats can suffer from it the same as us – well, I do anyway.

Good luck and I hope your doggie is o.k.
