One good method might be to take petroleum jelly/Vaseline and smear a coat around the edge and into the entrance of the access hole to the sugar water. This should prevent bees/ ants from being able to climb on/into the feeder. This will not prevent the birds from feeding as their beaks will reach all the way in. hope this helps.

get a feeder with a good design. The sugar solution should be completely enclosed by the feeder except for the narrow opening for the beak of the hummingbird. The opening needs to be narrow enough to exclude most insects. I don’t have any problem with my feeder, and it’s been out all summer and visited by hummingbirds. I have bees on flowers nearby, but they can’t access the sugar at the feeder, so they completely ignore it.
