Malathion is an organo-phosphate pesticide AKA carbophos, maldison and mercaptothion – http://extoxnet.orst.edu/pips/malathio.htm.

Both are safe when used according to the label. Malathion has long been used for mosquito control, but there are many folks who would argue that it is toxic.

Sevin is somewhat toxic to cats. Some experts recommend avoiding use on cats, I would never use it on mine. http://www.epa.gov/EPA-PEST/1997/August/Day-27/p22668.htm

Sevin is toxic to bees. In fact the precaution to avoid applying when and where bees visit is on the label. For that reason alone I do not use it on veggies.

Depending on what you want to control, there are non-toxic alternatives. Insecticidal soaps are good for contact control of pests. So is horticultural oil. Bacillius thurengensis is great for worms, this bacteria is sprayed on the plants, the caterpillars feed on it and stop feeding within about 3 hours, thought it may be days before they die.

Whatever you decide, be sure to read and follow all label instructions. Pesticide labels carry the weight of law and are the best source for info on safely and correctly using a pesticide. It is important that you experiment, but keep in mind that your mileage varies. Some sites fit so well with Adsense and can earn thousands from it (example is my website), while some can earn very little from it — EVEN with tremendous amount of traffic. You have to remember that your income will depend on several factors:

1. keywords shown on your site
2. level of advertiser bidding on your site – e.g. keywords “diamond” is worth more than “squirrel games” because more advertisers are willing to spend money on those interested in diamonds
3. your traffic levels – the more traffic you have, the better
4. your CTR rate – the higher the better and this depends on your ad placement, your ad colors
5. responsiveness of audience to ads
5. smartpricing – the big unknown in Adsense

The only way you can learn about how your site will perform with Adsense is through trying it.

WebmasterWorld has a lot of discussions on Adsense and one of the most active discussions right now is the thread “How I made a Million in 3 Months with Adsense http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum89/12751.htm . The person who started the thread is Markus Finch, who operates the immensely popular online dating website PlentyofFish.com. PlentyofFish.com’s business model is different from the subscription based model used by the big online dating websites. Instead of subscriptions, Markus relies on advertising, specifically Google Adsense to derive income from his website. The lessons he shares are:

1. Understand your traffic and how it could affect your keywords.
2. Create sites that will bring in repeat traffic.
3. Have your users create content and lots of it.
4. Do not enter markets with a lot of competition monitized via adsense.
5. Keep your site simple.
6. Learn from various forums and if people are not talking about your market, there is a good chance you will make money.

Markus’ website has an impressive Alexa rank of 1,407. What is more impressive is that the site is only a two-person operation, with Markus getting help from his girlfriend unlike his big competitors run by big corporations (e.g. Viacom owns Match.com).

A few years back, the entire Los Angeles area was aerial sprayed with Malathion (sevin) to eradicate the Mediterranean Fruit Fly, A Los Anglese council man drank a glass of Malathion during a city council meeting to prove it was harmless. He is still alive and so is the population of Los Angeles.

Be sure not to get over spray / powder onto things like squash or cucumbers that depend on bees to pollinate them. Sevin will kill all bees and wasp.
