Why do some men commit themselves to drama queens?

One of my friends married a woman after she got him landed in jail, marked up his car, and acted a fool at his job. Another friend is very much committed to a woman who insisted that she was on birth control when she wasn’t. He didn’t want another kid with her and told her that. Another guy I know is infactuated with a woman who seeks to get her ego stroked in between relationships. Another guy I know is very committed to his childrens’ mother even though she keeps having sex with the neighbor everytime they move a new apartment. Another guy stays with his girlfriend even though she has no respect for him, screams at him, curses him out. Constantly accuses of him cheating and screens his cell phone calls.
What’s going on?

  1. It keeps things interesting I suppose.

  2. Wow, sounds like a British sitcom.

I think men like drama queens because of the emotional intensity.
This is opposed to men who like drag queens because they really just like other men.

It might also be low self-esteem – “I can’t get anyone else, and she pays me more attention than anyone else would” etc.

  3. The combination of these two, which is toxic:
    1) Those guys have poor self-image and believe they can’t do any better; and
    2) The dellusional belief that, if they show really really hard that they “care” (whatever that means in their head), then the Drama will finish with a Happy Ending. In the guys’ experience, when they (timidly) stand up for themselves, they face a sh!tstorm of protest and hate, so their natural tendency is to do the opposite and try to appease the beast.

  4. Most guys that I know WOULD NOT put up with that!!!! Thats just weird….maybe it gives them a thrill? Or makes them feel needed?

  5. alot of times it acts as an ego padder….it pads their egos. To know someone is obsessed or acts like a fool because of him, it gives him a sense of power…usually a false sense.

  6. The men you know seem to have low-self-esteem or think they can’t get anything better, I guess. (For all your examples of men in bad relationships there are just as many, if not more, women in equally bad relationships.)

It’s a form of self-sabotage. Be with someone who is *bad* for you, and the relationship is bound to end and it won’t be your fault.

But be with someone who is *good* for you and the stakes are oh so much higher. You fall for them, but what if they leave you etc.? A lot of pain ensues, that’s what!

So men (and women) pick the bad option (and a lot of the time they genuinely don’t believe they deserve better, too!)
