Garden pests, what are they?

I grow Basil, I have for years. This year though I have little gold, flying, beetles that are eating it up. They actually appear to get high off it because they drop to the ground and spin around on their back like they are lost. Think of cats and catnip. One of the little beetles was on its back rubbing its eyes like a mammal might. I don’t want to use chemicals. Anyone know what they are and how I can get rid of them? They only like the basil.

Anyone notice bees dying locally? Mid-San Diego County?

This summer I’ve noticed, for the first time, dead bees (yellow jackets) dead on our patio and our deck. Not lots of bees at one time, but two or three times I week I find dead ones. We’re not using any chemicals on our shrubs, although I can’t speak for neighbors. Lived here for 10 years, and this is the first I’ve ever noticed. We also replaced our lawn with a patio, so perhaps it’s just more noticeable? It disturbs me because I know it’s a worldwide phenomena.

Bugs in my house, move or treat and how?…?

We bought a house in November. Inspection didn’t reveal problems, but since then we have had infestations of crickets, termites, carpenter ants as well as one mouse and numerous spider eggs in the basement. I fear the warmer spring weather will bring even more and perhaps even dangerous bugs i.e. mosquitoes, bees etc. What to do? help! We have vinyl siding – is everything just living under there? Is that fixable? Should we just move? The exterminator said it looked like there were infestations of termites as long as 4 years ago? what do I do – sell? clean the siding? treat the entire lawn for everything? I have a toddler so chemicals must be safe. Today an exterminator came to look at my ants and we found a large bug in the bathroom he couldn’t even identify!!!! He took it back to his lab in the same bag he used to carry one of my ants and the big thing began eating the ant!!! Please advise.
