Excel Chess set problem?

i made a chess set in excel. i used cells A1:H8. 64 Squares.
I set it up so every other square is black and the rest grey. (like a normal set)
and i typed the names of the pieces and there colors in the correct positions in white.
EX Rook-White or Queen-Black.

When i want to move a piece i have to click on the cell. highlight the text in the formula bar. cut that text and paste it to the new cell. if i just clicked on the cell and hit ctrl x it would bring the color of that cell with it and mess it up.

How can do it better?
It wont let me hit paste special.. all im cutting is a cell with a fill color and text… ?

am i cheated by yahoogroups?

i have a group called XL-mania, it’s about anything related with Microsoft Excel. when i typed “Microsoft Excel” in yahoogroups search toolbar, a month ago, my group show up as a TOP FIVE because the member already more than 3300. But now, if i type the same keyword, it doesn’t show up!

Even if i typed “XL-mania” as a keyword, my groups showed as the last number! Why did this happende? did the search function supposed to sort by the highest team member?

if you try with “Microsoft Excel” keywords, or another keywords, yahoogroups always sorted from the most member to lower ones, not from the creation date. The exception is… my XL-mania *sob* T_T
o.k. i know this is a free service, but what make me disappointed is before the yahoogroups upgrade, XL-mania is listed in top five, but now… sigh…..
hhhmmm… yahoo still not give me such answer T_T *sob* am i just another annoying customer?

MS Excel functions, giving text a numerical value?

For a part of an extended project, I’m creating a spreadsheet to do with a card game, where I want to be able to input the card’s suit and value (i.e: 3 CL, or Queen DM) However, after that part, I need to use the card’s value, and their suit is irrelevant, and I need to give the cards a numerical value. Basically, all I need to do is have a cell with a function that will see “Queen DM” and convert it to 12. An Ace (of any suit) would be 1, a Jack (of any suit) would be 11, and a King (of any suit) would be 13.

To clarify, I have the cell E3 as “Queen DM” and I want to refer to it in cell H2 as a 12. I think I need to use the “=VALUE(text)” function reference, but I’m not sure how to use it properly.

Is there anyone that can give me some help on some Excel formulas?

example: Column A I want to list say McDonalds, Dairy Queen, Burger King, White Castle. And then I want column B to be validated to just a range of cells depending on the criteria entered in Column A. Say you chose McDonalds. So in Column B I only want McDonald’s menu items to come up.

does that make sense? Thanks for any help
