Is it possible to overcome arachnophobia without contact?

I was never a fan of spiders, but I was never afraid of them. That was when I lived in the northeast. Recently my husband and I relocated to Southern California, and I am no paralyzed by fear after realizing we have black widows in the area. I know that they’re more common outside, but our neighbors have had a few in their house, and a nest was found a block away. Things like shaking out your clothes before you wear them, is something we’re SUPPOSED to do now, but it just adds to my creepy crawly feeling 24/7. I can’t sleep well, and I’m constantly looking around terrified that there is some spider somewhere that is going to bite me.

Is there a way to overcome this fear without having to do some sort of contact therapy? I’m hoping that I’ll just adjust over time to the existence of these creepy crawlers in this area, but right now its so overwhelming.

What kind of bug bite is this, and is it serious?

My 8-yr old brother has a bite the size of a dime on his back with about 3 yellow spots circling it closely. I’ve only seen similar bites from spiders. We’re in NJ.

Is it something to be concerned with?
