How can I use symbols in Windows XP?

I need to incorporate foreign phrases into text that I am creating. To do that, I need to use symbols that aren’t on the standard keyboard. I’m assuming there’s a combination of keys you press that gives you a chart/table/ to choose from, but I don’t know how. Would you be so kind as to inform me?

  1. Press Alt+ The numbers on the keyboard that’s not above the letters. Try experimenting with it.

  5. Yes it is possible to type the special symbols. This is how you do it:
    1. Find the code for the symbol you want to type. Codes can be found here:
    http://www.cdrummond.qc.ca/cegep/informat/Professeurs/Alain/files/ascii.htm

Note: Look at the DEC column for the code

    2. Once you have the code, lets say the code is 168 for an inverted question mark, hold the ALT key and type 168 on the NUMBER PAD. (You must use the number pad)

The numbers should be typed using the number pad on your keyboard and make sure you have your NUM LOCK on. This won’t work if you use the numbers underneath the function keys.
