Almost every website, every online company, and even some blogsites have a signup process in which you are often required to give personally identifiable information or else you can not use their services. Even just visiting websites transmits to that website’s server your ip address and other potentially identifiable information, depending on what ‘cookies’ that website transmits to your computer. Even out in the real world, unless you are using cash all the time, every transaction you make with your credit card or bank card transmits personally identifiable information to that company’s database. Just walking around in public places will have your face on any number of video surveillance cameras in stores, shopping centers, trainstations, etc.. There is even a global surveillance computer network called ECHELON which can scan phone conversations, e-mails, and any form of digital communication for certain keywords / information. My question is: why all this surveillance?

Because of my favorite quote: “The only time when your free, is when time doesn’t exsist.” They say we’re free and all that crap but the have to have control somehow. Survelince is the way they do it. When I have the money, I’m just gunna screw it, get on a private plane “that i pay for with SOLID CASH” and tell them to fly me to Mongolia. I’d pay them double the rate to not verify in the radar tower, therefore there would be no trace of where I went. AHAHAAHAHAHA!!!

When joining websites etc. your details are required so that you can be identified properly if you abuse it. If you start publishing inflammatory stuff it could come back on them unless they can point the authorities to the originator.
The rest of surveillance should not be a worry except to criminals and terrorists.
Recording of credit card details is very useful to the card holder if it is stolen and makes sorting the problem and identifying theft far easier.
Echelon screens calls and emails for keywords. If one is detected the call is recorded and passed to an intelligence annalist who decides if it is innocent or requires further action. This has enabled many terrorists, spies and criminals to be caught. So it protects society. I am sure many of the more extreme views on this site are picked up and forwarded for intelligence analysis.
CCTV is everywhere. In the main it deters criminals but even when it does not, it usually brings help much quicker and it certainly aids the discovery of the criminals identity and aids conviction.
So I would say the answer to your question is that it makes the world a safer place.
