 Blue-fronted Amazon Parrot
Amazona aestiva xanthopteryx
The blue-fronted amazon parrot is a very popular pet. It can be very affectionate and is easy to train. Amazons are the second best vocalized birds, second only to the African Gray. In addition to learning to speak words amazon parrots can also whistle and mimic household sounds. Blue-front amazons are highly intelligent parrots, but can be moody as they reach maturity or during molting. Moody behavior is stronger in males. Blue-fronted amazons love to climb and chew on things. As with other parrots they should not be left alone outside of their cage.
The natural range of the blue-fronted amazon is the forests of Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay. Blue-fronted amazon parrots are mainly green in color. The amount and tone of blue and yellow on he head can vary extremely among individuals. The wings often have yellow or red. Blue-fronted amazons are mid-sized parrots and can reach about fifteen inches in length. Their diet consists of fresh fruits and vegetables. Parrot food is also available in pellets. Nuts and seeds should be kept to a minimum as most amazon parrots are prone to obesity in captivity.
Blue-fronted amazon parrots should be kept in a large cage of at least 24 by 26 by 24 inches. It is true of course the bigger the cage the better. The parrot should be able to spread its wings without touching the side of the cage. A cage with a play top is perfect. Blue-fronted amazons need lots of toys to chew on and toys to climb on. It is also recommended to clip the flight feathers to prevent injuries. You do not want your amazon parrot to fly indoors and crash into walls. And even though it will probably stay on your arm or shoulder outside, should it get scared for whatever reason it will fly away. That's a natural instinct you will not be able to do anything about, hence clip the flight feathers. If your bird's toe nails get too long they can also be clipped to prevent injuries.
As with most parrots, blue-fronted amazons need attention and love to play. If neglected they will become moody and pluck their own feather, as do most parrots if not treated right. They even enjoy water and can be trained to take a shower with their owner or by themselves. Parrots that do not get enough sleep will show aggressive behavior. Blue-fronted amazons are also able to learn tricks. Before deciding to get a blue-fronted amazon you should ask yourself if you can take care of it and provide a good home for it. Amazons can get 25 years or older with good care. A blue-fronted amazon parrot will be a good family pet for a very long time.
